Thailand Launches TouristDigiPay to Facilitate Crypto Conversions for Travelers
Thailand has introduced TouristDigiPay, a pioneering initiative allowing international tourists to convert cryptocurrencies into Thai Baht for seamless local transactions. The program, developed in collaboration with key financial regulators, aims to modernize travel spending while maintaining strict anti-money laundering controls.
Tourists can now bypass traditional currency exchanges by converting digital assets via QR code payments. Merchants receive Baht directly, insulating them from crypto volatility. The system imposes monthly spending limits of ฿50,000 (~$1,400) at small businesses and ฿500,000 (~$14,000) at card-terminal merchants.
This strategic MOVE comes as Thailand's tourism sector rebounds from pandemic lows and declining Chinese visitation. By positioning itself as a crypto-friendly destination, the kingdom taps into the growing demographic of digital asset holders seeking frictionless cross-border spending.
